Glossary
There is more to selecting a blind fabric than style and colour. For your blind to achieve its performance objectives, there are a number of scientific issues which have to be considered: e.g. how open the fabric surface is, the amount of sunlight to be transmitted, reflected and absorbed and heat to be controlled; choice of glazing; amount of natural daylight required and environmental control equipment.

The performance of each Mermet fabric is assessed against a number of key scientific values such as Solar Transmission, Reflection and Absorption, Openess Factor and Shading Co-efficient. These values are expressed in an industry shorthand, or symbol, and the table below is intended as a guide to each value.

Term Means Explanation
Ts Solar transmittance The percentage of solar energy passing through the fabric.
Rs Solar reflectance The percentage of solar energy reflected by the fabric.
As Solar absorptance The percentage of solar energy absorbed by the fabric
Tv Visible transmittance The ratio of visible solar energy passing through the fabric is related to the amount of glare received through a glazing system.
Fs Solar factor The solar factor is the fraction of incident energy which penetrates trough the protected window.
Sc Shading coefficient Shading coefficient Sc is the ratio between the solar factors of the protected window (glazing + sunblind) and the solar factor of the glazing alone Sc = (glazing + sunblind) Fs (glazing).
1/8" Cl. Standard Clear 1/8" glass (3 mm)
1/4" Cl Standard Clear 1/4" glass (6 mm)
1/4" HA Absorbent 1/4" glass (6 mm)
Sc External External blind
Sc Internal Internal blind
